Student testimonials
Gila is an amazing teacher! I thoroughly enjoyed her workshop and loved the end result. I had never worked with mosaics before, so it was fun trying a new art form.
~Marianne A
Gila is an excellent artist and teacher. Her studio is well set up to allow students to accomplish beautiful work under her patient and skilled guidance. Her classes are unique and she makes it possible for students, even beginners, to go home with some work to be proud of. Highly recommended!

I thoroughly enjoyed Gila Mosaics Studio. I have been to two of Gila’s workshops at her studio: Beginning Mosaics and Mosaics Portraiture. I learned so much in her workshops, and they were fun! Gila was very thorough and knowledgeable in teaching about the process, tools, and materials used to make the mosaics.

Mixed Materials Portraiture
(Human or Animal) – Course Description
In this workshop participants will create a mosaic (Animal) portrait under Gila’s guidance. Gila will share methods & techniques she’s learned thru trial and error, various workshops, including a short course at the Mosaic School in Spilembergo Italy, all with her own personal twists. The materials used will be a combination of picassiette (dishes, saucers, pottery, etc), various glass, ceramic, and other hard materials. Participants may also choose to incorporate additional items such as stone, marble and found objects that have special meaning to them.
Gila will demonstrations proper usage of hand tools to cut & shape each material, and provide a multitude of tips on using these materials in combination, to create texture & interest within your mosaic work. Each participant will receive individual attention & guidance throughout the workshop while working on their own unique portrait.
Since individuals work at different paces, not everyone is expected to finish their portrait in this short workshop. However, Gila will demonstrate the finishing process as well as discuss an individual plan for completion with each student before the end of the workshop. Participants will leave the workshop with a good understanding of choosing a subject, preparing a design, understanding value, cutting materials & setting them into a mortar bed, and much more.
Everyone is encouraged to bring an item or three (dishes, pottery, teacups, etc), which contain designs or patterns to enhance & personalize their chosen subject. Thrift stores & yard sales are perfect, inexpensive sources for finding these materials.
Once registered for a course, students will receive an email from Gila regarding reference choices and a list of additional materials &/or tools that may be necessary or helpful for the workshop.
