Another Juan
Artwork Description
Sometimes a title arrives before anything else. In this case, the irresistible pun came with the portrait.
Modeled after Juan, an artist from Barcelona, Spain, this mosaic doesn’t whisper—it announces itself. Bold reds, yellows, and blacks create a vibrant presence, while strong patterns and richly textured surfaces give the portrait its unmistakable energy.
One of my favorite elements is the shirt, constructed from golden fleur-de-lis that shimmer against the darker tones of the composition. Combined with the patterned face and expressive features, the result is both striking and playful.
I was drawn to the way color, texture, and personality all seem to compete for attention. The longer you look, the more connections emerge between the fragments, but the portrait’s impact is immediate.
Like the title, this piece doesn’t take itself too seriously. It’s full of character, visual surprises, and just enough humor to start a conversation.
Juan is #41 in my ongoing series of mosaic portraits of contemporary artists from around the world.
