This self-portrait captures a bit of silliness that has become a tradition between my partner and me. Every now and then, one of us balances our fingers on our head like a hat, the other follows suit, and before long we’re both laughing.

After more than 25 years together, it’s these small, ridiculous moments that still bring us joy.

Making art requires focus, patience, and plenty of serious thinking. Life, on the other hand, is better when balanced with a little play. This portrait is a reminder not to take ourselves too seriously and to leave room for laughter wherever we can find it.
